Squircle Squared Circle Polka Dot Afghan Square Tutorial

A good way to use up yarn scraps, this motif combines a circular center with a squared border, making it easy to combine together into a variety of projects!

Need to brush up on basic stitches? Check out Crochet Crash Course 101!

To make this motif, you'll need:
Yarn (medium, worsted weight, 4)
Crochet hook (any size 5mm-6.5mm, depending on desired drape)
[5.5 was used for the video]
scissors & tapestry needle

Stitches you'll use:
chain-ch
slip stitch-sl st
single crochet-sc
half double crochet-hdc
double crochet-dc

For circular rounds, ch3 does NOT count as a stitch. For two squared border rounds, 3ch DOES count as a stitch.

Row 1: make a magic ring. Chain 3, make 12 dc inside ring. Sl st to top of 1st dc. [12 dc]

Row 2: chain 3. 2 dc in same space as ch 3. 2 dc in each stitch to end of row. Sl st to top of 1st dc. [24 dc]

Row 3: chain 3, 1dc in same space as ch 3. 2 dc next space.
*1 dc in next space, 2 dc in next space. Repeat from * to end of row. Sl st to top of 1st dc. Cut yarn, fasten off. [36 dc]

Row 4: Attach new color of yarn. Chain 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same space. (1st corner made)
1 dc in next st, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc.
2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same space (2nd corner made) 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc.
2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same space (3rd corner made) 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc.
2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in same space (4th corner made) 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc.
Sl st to 3rd ch of starting chain. Sl st into top of each st until you reach ch 2 space in corner. (Last sl st will be into ch2 space)

Row 5: chain 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc into ch 2 space of previous row.
1 dc in each stitch across until you reach corner 2.
Repeat corner 2 as in last round (2dc, ch 2, 2dc).
Continue as above, dc in each st, making corners the same as before until you reach your starting chain 3.
Sl st to top of chain 3, sl st into next stitch.

Cut yarn & fasten off. Weave in ends.

Repeat until you have as many squares as you want, and join them together to make your object!
